A European Study of the Performance and Safety of MINIject in Patients With Medically Uncontrolled Open-angle Glaucoma (STAR-II)
2020
Precis In this European study (STAR-II), MINIject, a novel, ab-interno, supraciliary MIGS device, effectively lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) and the need for IOP-lowering medications in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Purpose To evaluate the safety and performance of a minimally invasive supraciliary glaucoma drainage device (MINIject DO627, iSTAR Medical SA, Wavre, Belgium) for surgical treatment of primary open angle glaucoma in patients refractory to topical hypotensive medications. Methods In a prospective, interventional, single-arm, multi-center, European study (STAR-II), MINIject was successfully implanted in a standalone procedure in 29 of 31 patients in 8 sites in 3 …
Two Cases of Thyroid Dysgenesis Caused by Different Novel PAX8 Mutations in the DNA-Binding Region: In Vitro Studies Reveal Different Pathogenic Mech…
2013
Mutations in PAX8, a transcription factor gene, cause thyroid dysgenesis (TD). The extreme variability of the thyroid phenotype makes it difficult to identify individuals harboring PAX8 gene mutations. Here we describe two patients with TD and report two novel PAX8 gene mutations (S54R and R133Q). We performed in vitro studies to functionally characterize these mutations.Using PAX8 expression vectors, we investigated whether the PAX8 mutants localized correctly to the nucleus. To analyze the DNA-binding properties of S54R and R133Q, electrophoretic mobility shift assays were performed. Furthermore, we measured whether the mutant PAX8 proteins were able to activate the thyroglobulin (TG)- an…

Predicting the age at natural menopause in middle-aged women
2021
Objective To predict the age at natural menopause (ANM). Methods Cox models with time-dependent covariates were utilized for ANM prediction using longitudinal data from 47 to 55-year-old women (n = 279) participating in the Estrogenic Regulation of Muscle Apoptosis study. The ANM was assessed retrospectively for 105 women using bleeding diaries. The predictors were chosen from the set of 32 covariates by using the lasso regression (model 1). Another easy-to-access model (model 2) was created by using a subset of 16 self-reported covariates. The predictive performance was quantified with c-indices and by studying the means and standard deviations of absolute errors (MAE ± SD) between the pre…
